MAYI DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE

Mayi development initiative was formed in 2006 and later on registered by the district community development office, it has existed for a period of 10 years and more since its inception.

The core activities of the organization include; poverty reduction among communities, environmentalconservation, promoting girl child education, counseling and guidance of orphans, Saving and credit cooperative society.

The CBO is headed by the chairperson with other six members who are secretary, treasurer, informationpublicity, vice-chairperson and other three members.

By August, 2013, the total membership had reached 81 members with 18 men and 62 women. Currently we have over 300 members and more The organization has executed several activities/projects in the field of climate change adaptation and mitigation among others projects under INBAR , UWA ,CDD and NAADS. Its co-partner organization which is an arm implementing the climate resilience projects Aw Bamboo Enterprises Ltd was registered on 2012 so as to help in direct running of the social arm of business as it supports community while ensuring Business sustainability through value addition to different products ranging from Bamboo to coffee other products too.

The Value Proposition

Mayi and AW Bamboo Enterprises have come in to bridge this big gap and ease the above tensions as we meet the two key SDGs of Environmental conservation and Poverty eradication in the Mt. Elgon sub region. We have embarked on a big drive to grow highland Bamboo on the Mt Elgon slopes in partnership with UWA given that Bamboo is a great natural carbon sink to ensure sustainable environmental conservation and growth of Bamboo in the region .

Therefore the project will promote different species but mainly Bamboo tree planting as solution reversing deforestation trends while beekeeping will not only contribute to household income but also biodiversity conservation through pollination functions.

Project objectives and expected results.

Goal of the project: To promote sustainable Growth of Bamboo, fish farming, beekeeping, fruit farming and coffee growing for climate change mitigation and livelihood improvement.

Specific project objectives.

  1. To Re-afforestate 1 Mile of Bamboo cover on the slopes of Mt Elgon
  2. To train and over 300 Out growers of farmers in Bamboo production , tree planting, beekeeping and coffee management
  3. To promote livelihood enterprises as a solution to poverty alleviation and climate change adaptation along the slopes of Mt Elgon
  4. To Add Value and diversify Bamboo, coffee and Beekeeping products to attract competitive markets, Enhance the Business volumes for increased household earnings in the Mt Elgon Region amongst the women and youth.
  5. To ensure Sustainable use and cultural promotion of the Natural habitat through creating awareness by capacity building of all the communities living along the Mt elgon region.
